How to Style Throw Pillows Like a Pro (Without Buying New Ones)

Most people think a beautifully styled sofa requires a decorator, a big budget, or a very patient partner willing to move pillows around for an hour. It doesn't. It requires three rules and the courage to try something different.
Rule One: Always Use Odd Numbers
Designers have known this forever — odd numbers feel natural, even numbers feel stiff. On a standard sofa, try three pillows. On a sectional, try five. On a chair, try one or three. Your eye reads odd groupings as intentional and relaxed at the same time, which is exactly the feeling a great living room should have.
With the Savary Soul system, this is easy to play with — swap one cover out, keep the others, and the whole combination shifts without the cost of starting over.
Rule Two: Layer Your Sizes
A sofa full of identical square pillows looks like a hotel that's trying too hard. The magic is in the mix. Start with your largest pillow at the back (our L size, 20x20") and work forward to something smaller or longer. A lumbar pillow — our SR or LL sizes — in front of a square pillow adds depth, dimension and a little editorial flair that makes people ask who designed your room.
Rule Three: Mix Texture Before You Mix Pattern
If you're nervous about mixing patterns, start with texture first. A solid linen cover next to an embroidered cover next to a woven check gives your eye enough variation to be interesting without feeling busy. Once you feel confident with texture, adding a subtle pattern becomes easy and intuitive.
The Swap Advantage
The beauty of interchangeable covers is that none of these decisions are permanent. Try a combination, live with it for a week, decide you want something different — swap the cover in thirty seconds. No storage problem. No wasted money. Just your home evolving with you.
